Expressionism on the role of the actor can be quite a change from the other genres of practice. Expressionism breaks the Stanislavsky’s role of naturalism, therefore making it difficult to learn and adjust for actors of the modern day. This art form is so much more complex as the main aim is to express an intense emotional effect as well as physical. It is a very abstract art form, therefore even the process of creating an acting piece is very different from the 'normal' approach e.g. Stanislavsky's naturalism. Actors might find this more challenging as it covers many more aspects, however it is becoming increasingly popular among different artists.
Expressionism is a more expressive way of trying to deliver a message, or a type of emotion to the meaning of a performance. For example, the display of a person to be a happy may just be them simply smiling, while an expressionism method to show it, may be to use their whole body, rather than just the face. Becoming sad doesn't always have to be self-explanatory, to express this through expressionism, an actor would put their whole body to use, creating shapes and putting themselves in perhaps unusual positions e.g rolling up into a ball on the floor, or constantly hitting a wall.
Expressionism's main affect is to have to an intense emotional affect on the actor. This could affect the actor in numerous other ways such as physically and mentally. In todays society raised under a naturalistic style of acitng, actors today would have a greater deal of difficulty approaching these methods. Expressionism would have a far greater impact on an actor than it would have done 80 years ago, when expressionism was far and widely spread. It would also delve into the real of being un naturalistc and performing in a style that would be not comfortable as such to them. Emotionally an actor would have to comprehend ideas and views outside of the natural world and see points of view differently. This is why expressionism is such a powerful tool and techinique to use as it allows actors to see objects from a different point of view.
Expressionism is an art form that aims to convey a strong emotion or message to an audience in a surreal and non naturalistic manner. Because of this, expressionism can be a hard art form for actors to use as they must turn away from naturalism, which Stanislavski believed was one of the most essential styles of acting. Actors must therefore, find ways of sending their message to their audience through non-naturalistic techniques. These could include: non-verbal communication, exaggerated gestures, routine, dance and music.
Expressionism could be explained as delivering a performance in a more indirect manner. It is in fact the opposite of naturalism which is an important tool of Stanislavski when he teaches. It is harder to work an expressionist piece through because you have to find more expressive ways to get your message though to the audience. As i have been working for the contextual studies piece I found that it is in fact really fun to be acting in a non-naturalistic way which has no boundaries as your imagination runs infinite with ways to express yourself.
It is possible for the actor to really show physically how angry or happy he/she is because it is possible to go to extremes while explaining yourself in an expressionist manner. It also enables for the actors to use their bodies to do whatever they want and be what ever they want and it doesn't matter if it is and inanimate object as long as you can explain yourself.
Expressionism is completely different to that of today’s naturalistic style. Expressionism is an art form that takes a huge step away from naturalism and aims to create an intense physical and emotional effect on the actor. For example – pushing their bodies further to create a more expressive way of putting a point across and expanding their minds further than ever before to break the boundaries of today’s very naturalistic way of acting. An actor would have a whole new way of approaching an expressionism performance as 9 times out of 10 they will have most likely not have come across something like it.
I feel this type of movement can affect an actor both physically and mentally for long periods perhaps forever I feel that an expressionists stands out if in a piece he is the only actor using this method to find a character it would be interesting to find if expressionism is used by actors in Shakespeare for example or if it is just limited to expressionist pieces, I feel the that expressionism explorers a character in a different way to naturalism, naturalism asks the actor to explore the character through questions whereas expressionism asks the actor to distort reality in order to understand a character with potentially permanent physiological damage.
