Live Art

Use the seven chosen elements voted
for in the lecture on Live Art to create a short
proposal that outlines your own DIY Live Art
piece.

  1. My idea for a live art piece, regarding the seven elements chosen, is simply a walk around the city of Nottingham. There are plenty of things to see and things to do, so it could easily last for 60 minutes, and the location is also as it states "on a street".

I could gain members of the public to become my audience and walk with me, as this will add to a "chance encounter" and an interactive piece, because they can choose to do whatever I do - whether it be purchase something from a shop, or simply eat something in a fast food restaurant.

The piece itself will reflect on Robin Deacon's idea of everyday life, because my daily routine is to walk through the city of Nottingham.

  2. My idea for a live art piece which would cover the seven elements we had chosen in class would be to have a massive human size fish bowl in the square of Nottingham filled with water. I would have an orange scuba suit with oxygen tank on my back. This would have enough air available for 60 minutes. I would swim around the tank with a sign on my front asking people to feed me. In front of the bowl would be small blue balls. People could climb up to the top of the fish bowl and place a ball inside. These would dissolve in the water and in turn change the colour over the hour of the performance. Also any member of the audience who placed a ball into the water half an hour later would have a blue stain appear on their hands. There would be my voice over playing through the whole 60 minutes discussing interesting facts about gold fish, here is some of the info I have researched that I might place on the recording.
I have always wondered what it would be like to be a gold fish in a bowl, To be just looked at. To have big fingers tapping on the glass.
During the 1620s, goldfish were highly regarded in Southern Europe because of their metallic scales, and symbolized good luck and fortune. It became tradition for married men to give their wives a goldfish on their one year anniversary, as a symbol for the prosperous years to come. This tradition quickly died, as goldfish became more available, losing their status. Goldfish were first introduced to North America around 1850 and quickly became popular in the United States.[9][10]
Goldfish have a memory-span of at least three months and can distinguish between different shapes, colors and sounds.[24][25] Goldfish vision is among the most studied of all vision in fishes. [26] By using positive reinforcement, goldfish can be trained to recognize and to react to light signals of different colors[27] or to perform tricks.[28] Fish respond to certain colors most evidently in relation to feeding.[citation needed] Fish learn to anticipate feedings provided they occur at around the same time everyday.
As of April 2008, the largest goldfish in the world was believed by the BBC to measure 19 inches (48 cm), and be living in the Netherlands.[20] At the time, a goldfish named "Goldie", kept as a pet in a tank in Folkestone, England, was measured as 15 inches (38 cm) and over 2 pounds (0.91 kg), and named as the second largest in the world behind the Netherlands fish.[
Goldfish have strong associative learning abilities, as well as social learning skills. In addition, their visual acuity allows them to distinguish between individual humans. Owners may notice that fish react favorably to them (swimming to the front of the glass, swimming rapidly around the tank, and going to the surface mouthing for food) while hiding when other people approach the tank. Over time, goldfish learn to associate their owners and other humans with food, often "begging" for food whenever their owners approach
Responses from a blind goldfish proved that it recognized one particular family member and a friend by voice, or vibration of sound.[citation needed] This behavior was remarkable because it showed that the fish recognized the vocal vibration or sound of two people specifically out of seven in the house.
Some countries ban the sale of traditional fishbowls under animal welfare legislation due to the risk of stunting, deoxygenation and ammonia/nitrite poisoning in such a small environment.[citation needed] Because of their large oxygen needs and high waste output, such bowls are no longer considered appropriate housing for goldfish.[31]

  3. My live art piece will be based on a rehearsed argument between a group of teenagers that takes place on a side street in town. When considering that my piece had to take place on a street and had to focus on an everyday life encounter, I decided this would be a suitable idea as presumably, most people would have walked past or witnessed a group of people arguing in town.

As my piece must last for sixty minutes, I would like my actors to begin to fall out with each other, and then as the hour progresses, I would want them to start arguing more and more which will then develop into the start of a fight as the sixty minute performance draws to a close. This will be a very visual piece as it will take up a large section of the street and will also draw in the attention of people walking past as they will wonder what all the fuss is about.

As my piece must be interactive, I would want my actors to involve the audience which will be any people walking past by asking certain passers by who they agree with. As there must be some sort of trace left behind, I would get my actors to throw things at each other which would then be left on the floor when the piece is finished.

  4. My idea for a live art piece comes from the everyday life. To start the performance an audience should be collected rondom on the streets. After a group is established the walk on the streets for 60 mins starts. The performance will be 50% rehearsed and 50% improvisation. It will start by little discussions about the funny things people do everyday and the audience will have the chance to choose where they want to go and whom they would like to watch and discuss about their everyday funny situation.

It is a comedy and i think it would work great for the people as it would be stress relieving and entertaining both because of its nature and the locations chosen for the piece.

  5. My idea for a live art piece would be to lose someone a family member while walking through town, the piece will be 60 minutes, my actors will be posing as my family members and we would be going around town asking if they had seen the one that was lost, this would consist of everyday life encounter and it would take place in the street as part of the seven elements. We would interact with people in the street and maybe even ask others to join in and help.

We would begin by walking around town with a fast pace, as the minutes go by getting faster and faster eventually interacting with others around us. To leave a trace i would drop either a photo on the floor of the missing family member or an item of clothing like a scarf.

I think this would be very effective as it would show the way different people are, it would bring the question up of who would help and who wouldn't?

  6. My live art piece would be based around the idea that a percentage of people around you in everyday life feel alone and isolated but no one notices. My performance would consist of a large glass box with an opening door in a crowded area with me sat inside. Hanging above me would be a countdown of 1 hour. I would begin by blue tacking a large sign up that reads ‘if you feel the same then join me.’ Then one by one slowly I would blue tack signs saying different things such as; ‘alone’, ‘isolated’, ‘you’re not alone’, ‘we have to help each other’ etc. By the end the whole of the box will be covered with words and signs. Depending on the outcome of the play it will have two endings:
1st – If people have come into the box with me the countdown will turn into words (while I am taking the signs back down) that read ‘look I am not alone. There are people out there, every day people, people you bump into, strangers, people you know who may have a smile but something is wrong. This needs to stop. Today or a day in the future if you see someone who looks in need don’t ignore it. Ask if they are ok.
2nd – If nobody enters the box then the sign will read (again as I am pulling down the signs) Look to your left. Now look to your right. One of them will be having a problem today who just needs someone to tell them it be ok. They are being silent about it; they don’t want to make themselves known. This is wrong. This needs to stop. Today or a day in the future if you see someone who looks in need don’t ignore it. Ask if they are ok.
