  1. The word performance is used in many different forms within the forward to Goldberg’s text
The word Performance covers a wide range of style within the theatre arts. Performance manifestos concentrate on the aspect of there being no boundaries within performance. Unlike traditional theatre that must have rules.
Manifestos have no rules in acting, there are no limits to what can be said or shown.
Conceptual art is also mentioned within the text
Traced from Marcel Duchamp, conceptual art is a form of art in which the idea or ideas that a, work expresses are considered its essential point, with its visual appearance being of secondary.
Conceptual art challenges the validity of traditional art. And is made up of information e.g. documents, photographs….
Performance has been expressed within objects, the body of an actor or actress, by using intimate gestures large scale visual theatre; “lasting a few minutes too many hours may be performed only once or several times, with or without script”

    Also mentioned

    Live performance, Live gestures
Performance was made a catalyst in the
    Twentieth century art
    Cubism
    Minimalism
Avante garde-push the limits of what is considered as traditional
Surrealist objects paintings-does not refer to naturalism. dream like product

Most of the original Zurich Dadaists for example were poets, cabaret artists…

Performance art is described as a accepted medium of artistic expression in the 1970’s artists at the time used performance art to articulate difference in discourses of multiculturalism and globalism, a form that breaks the barriers between high and popular culture.
Overall I see performance as the core source that many different styles adaptions and strategies can be put within it and used as a tool.

    • Live performance
Goldberg talks about live performance and the way people showed their ideas through this, the history of art was also a big part of this. The performers did not just want to create publicity for themselves but to concentrate more on the way art is based.

    • Performance Manifestos
The futurist’s way of performance was to conjure large audiences and make them question their art and culture. The performances and work they did was to express the art world, they did this in many ways.
    • The presence
This is linked with the artist in society, these performances can be very extravagant, and performers were involved in many things. A lot of detail was also put in especially with the set and architecture.
‘Gian Lorenzo Bernini staged spectacles for which he wrote scripts, designed scenes and costumes, built architectural elements and even constructed realistic flood scenes’ (Goldberg page 9)
There were also writings about cubism, minimalism, Dadaists, expressionism and surrealism.
